The transition to a decarbonised and largely renewable energy system with increasing shares of electrification demands more from Europe’s electricity grids than ever before. Expanding grid infrastructure needs to go hand in hand with maximising the utilisation of existing grid capacity.

Exploring potential solutions to capacity optimisation and utilisation, we will host the Best Practice Webinar ‘Smart forecasting for resilient grids’ on 5 December 2025 from 11:30 to 13:00 CET.

During the session, we will explore a methodology framework that enables near-real-time probabilistic risk analysis for digital forecasting and planning. Developed by Arne Brufladt Svedsen and Tørris Digernes, this method aims to allow grid operators to identify grid stress and flexibility needs well in advance, therefore adapting to the rapidly changing energy landscape.

Looking at how digital forecasting can enhance grid operation and planning, participants will gain insights into how probabilistic models improve situational awareness, facilitate coordination between TSOs, DSOs and consumers, and inform flexibility implementation.

Drawing on experiences from Norway, the discussion will highlight how such approaches can strengthen resilience, improve efficiency, and support collaboration across Europe’s energy systems, while remaining mindful of the limitations and context-specific challenges of applying new digital tools.
