Building a shared understanding of the energy transition between industry and civil society

Today more than ever, the energy transition requires a holistic, cross-sectoral approach to the energy system. For its recent projects, the Regional Renewable Energy Connection Schemes (S3RenR) and the “Energy Pathways to 2050” report, RTE established a successful stakeholder engagement process to get insights from all stakeholders involved and to build a shared understanding of the challenges ahead.

Based on these two RTE projects and the fruitful consultation processes with the NGO France Nature Environment (FNE) throughout the project phases, the best practice webinar intends to showcase how stakeholder engagement, implemented from an early stage onwards, can significantly contribute to building a shared understanding of the energy transition between industry and civil society.

According to the French targets, the share of renewable energies in the electricity production mix must reach 40% by 2030. To ensure the integration of RES into the grid while preserving the safety of the system and controlling costs, the ‘S3REnR’ schemes constitute a spatial planning tool to accommodate green growth. In the first part of the webinar, the topic of discussion will evolve around improving the integration of local stakeholders’ expectations by involving them ahead of official consultations – using the example of ‘S3REnR’.

Back in 2019, RTE launched a wide-ranging study on the evolution of the power system called ‘Energy Pathways 2050’. The stakeholder engagement process along the different stages of the study will be illustrated and analysed during the second part of the webinar.
