RGI‘s Annual Report is released annually to provide insight into our activities from the preceding year. Within this edition, we explore our holistic approach to addressing the European energy crisis, and showcasing accomplishments, partnerships and advancements throughout 2022. Additionally, the report will allow readers to meet the people behind RGI and get an idea of what we are planning for the future.
Defined by numerous crises worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 2022 revealed dependencies and scarcity at multiple levels. The ambition to respond to them in a holistic way – centred around electricity grids for renewables that support both livelihoods and biodiversity – guided our activity development and our advocacy efforts in 2022.
To this end, we intensified our work on energy system modelling and management, and, together with Hitachi Energy, explored needed modelling efforts to reduce European dependence on Russian fossil fuels. We also expanded our offshore work under the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN), announced the establishment of OCEaN in the Mediterranean Sea, and welcomed a growing number of members and collaborators to our OCEaN work and events.
Furthermore, we conducted the 9th ‘Good Practice of the Year’ award, released diverse publications, received thousands of impressions on our bird protection campaign, welcomed Biom, Statnett, and Ember as new RGI Members, and IUCN as our second Supporting Member. With over 1300 posts on RGI’s social media channels, we promoted a strong debate on nature protection, technological innovation, policy advancements, and more.
