Topic
Spatial optimisation
Underscores the critical importance of holistic and multi-level planning to tackle spatial constraints, both on land and at sea, to accommodate different societal and economic activities, including energy infrastructure.
about the topic
The deployment of infrastructure needed to implement the decarbonised energy systems of the future will require a massive use of different resources, many which are becoming increasingly scarce.
Acknowledging the competition over space – both on land and at sea – between different societal and economic activities, RGI’s workstream on spatial optimisation underscores the critical importance of holistic and multi-level planning.
Within this topic, we explore existing tools which provide information on the system level, as well as those allowing for optimised spatial planning on the ground. In addition, we aim at promoting approaches and solutions which promote the implementation of energy infrastructure that co-exists with nature and society, such as multi-use initiatives.
