Discover RGI's new factsheet on the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) initiative. As an outcome of the kick-off meeting of the European 24/7 Hub, this document provides insights into the initiative's functionalities, implementation requirements, and impacts on the energy system.
In our journey towards achieving net-zero emissions, it is crucial to decarbonise the entire energy system. Merely matching energy consumption with clean sources annually falls short of achieving comprehensive decarbonisation for end-users. That's where 24/7 CFE comes in. By embracing innovative energy procurement approaches, this initiative empowers end-users to access carbon-free electricity around the clock, every day of the week. The benefits of 24/7 CFE lie not only in sourcing energy from local clean sources but also in consuming it in the same hour it is generated. This approach has the potential to expedite the deployment of renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power, while empowering consumers and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In January, RGI together with its TSO Members 50Hertz and EirGrid, led a session at the kick-off meeting of the European 24/7 Hub, facilitated by Eurelectric, with a focus on flexibility. Building on RGI's previous work on the 24/7 CFE initiative, we emphasised the pivotal role of Transmission System Operators (TSOs) in its successful implementation. We highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to maximise emission reduction and energy system benefits while ensuring grid security and reliability.
