RGI welcomes the adoption of the Renewables Directive by the European Parliament and calls for ambitious national implementation

The Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) welcomes the European Parliament’s adoption of the Renewables Directive on Tuesday. Our Members are committed to developing the grid that is needed to accommodate the growing share of renewables in the system.

They confirm that it is already technically possible today to safely operate an electricity system with high shares of renewables and are committed to work collaboratively to develop solutions for a fully decarbonised and sustainable electricity system. However, we need political commitment, a sensible regulatory framework, and reliable and efficient markets in order to achieve these solutions. A European commitment to increase the share of renewables is a step in the right direction and needs to be flanked by additional measures. Clear, forward-looking political engagement at national level is now required to back the decision of the European Parliament through the submission of ambitious national energy and climate plans and to support the development of the associated grids.
