Signing Ceremony of the Marine Grid Declaration - PCI Energy Days in Brussels

Increasing shares of renewables need to be integrated into the European power system to achieve the Union climate and energy targets. According to the 2016 TYNDP, it is envisaged that approximately one third of the needed future power grids, among them Projects of Common Interest, could be built in the marine environment. In response to this, RGI has sponsored the “Marine Grid Declaration” – an initiative which lays out a set of principles for the development of marine grids.

RGI and ACER Infrastructure Task Force Workshop on Regulation and Innovation

During the past years, many grid operators have substantially increased their stakeholder engagement activities, increasing transparency and speeding up grid development. These practices need a solid legal underpinning to be effective and consistent. We are meeting in Brussels to share experiences and discuss with TSOs and national regulators how participatory processes can be better recognised in national regulation.

RGI mini-workshop to share best practices: "Permitting, consultation and environmental protection for offshore transmission grids"

Marine renewables are expected to represent a significant share of Europe’s future renewable energy deployment. Guided by European regulation and the ambition to develop the European Internal Energy Market, grid developers are also increasing the number of submarine interconnectors. Together with experts, we want to discuss what we already do well and what we need to improve with regard to nature protection and stakeholder involvement in the marine environment.

Successful Dinner Discussion at COP24: Collaborative Grid Planning with ENTSO-E and ENTSOG

At this year’s COP in Katowice RGI joined the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and Gas (ENTSOG) to present our joint project on collaborative grid planning. The project brings together the ENTSOs as the developers of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) and environmental NGOs to maximise NGO input into the TYNDP scenarios. The ENTSOs and RGI were joined by the European environmental umbrella NGOs Climate Action Network (CAN Europe) and European Environmental Bureau (EEB) as well as the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21).

Video online - Webinar: How can funding programmes support grid operators in the energy transition? - Diving into EirGrid's best practices in grid development

Autumn has arrived and with it RGI’s best practice sharing season is starting again: We have teamed up with ENTSO-E to bring you a webinar that highlights the benefits and pitfalls of funding programmes established to aid the smooth implementation of grid projects needed for the energy transition.

Key findings online: "Plan, prepare, perform: Best practices for operating the system with high shares of renewables"

While the Paris Agreement has set clear targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, countries have developed very different strategies how to achieve them. However, one thing is clear: a timely decarbonisation of the power sector will be indispensable. This includes a progressive shift away from conventional fossil sources, a focus on strong and flexible system operation and the secure integration of high shares of renewables.
