COP29 Workshop: Power of the Seas

Nature Inclusive Design in Offshore Wind and Electricity Grid Deployment

Our side event will take the form of a workshop, showcasing the progress made in offshore wind and grid development, and their contribution to achieving the 1.5°C target. We aim to focus the discussion on state-of-the-art solutions for optimising grid infrastructure to enable offshore wind integration, as well as, opportunities offered by Nature-Inclusive Design (NID) to minimise environmental impact and contribute to a Nature-Positive approach.

As we accelerate the deployment of energy infrastructure to achieve decarbonisation and energy security, it is vital that we also meet biodiversity targets. While offshore wind holds significant potential for renewable energy generation, the challenges of grid integration must not be underestimated, nor should the environmental impacts or the conflicting interests of marine space users.

Europe, particularly the countries surrounding the North and Baltic Seas, has extensive experience in developing offshore wind and grid infrastructure. With the current level of deployment, the European experience is relevant to those just beginning their offshore planning and strategy. Our expertise in balancing energy development and environmental conservation is essential globally, as we cannot meet climate targets without also meeting biodiversity goals.

Following a couple of keynote speeches to introduce the topic, we will engage participants in group discussions on the importance of Nature-Positive activities in the development of offshore wind and electricity grids. Additionally, we aim to explore how to establish an industry-wide accepted definition of “Nature-Positive” in this sector.

We look forward to engaging with experts and developers from around the world and invite you to join us for this exciting and collaborative workshop.
