COP27 side event: Efficient planning of RES and grids as a key tool in addressing the climate & biodiversity crises

On the 16th of November 2022, RGI and NABU co-hosted a side event at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh. "Efficient planning of RES and grids as a key tool in addressing the climate & biodiversity crises" was discussed in a panel with perspectives from the wind energy industry and European and international nature conservation agencies.

RGI's COP27 side event with the Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) is titled 'Efficient planning of RES and grids as a key tool in addressing the climate & biodiversity crises' and centred around the question of how the inclusion of biodiversity - and specifically sensitivity mapping - into spatial planning processes can ensure safe siting and speed up the deployment of renewable generation and electricity grids.

Our keynote speakers from NABU and the Convention on Migratory Species discussed the importance of integrating biodiversity and shared strategic approaches that show how to practically implement related practices, in particular in the context of wind farm and grid development. Their inputs were followed by a panel that will debate how biodiversity-conscious energy infrastructure planning can be achieved along with the additional task of jointly planning generation and transmission infrastructure. The panel also discussed how this will scale and speed up deployment of RES and electricity grids as well as contribute to addressing the climate and biodiversity crises.

All side events were streamed live here on YouTube on the UN Climate Change - Events' channel. Watch the recording of our event on its dedicated page here.
