Workshop: Achieving offshore wind and biodiversity targets - opportunities and lessons learned in Europe’s seas

On 21 March, RGI, WindEurope, and Members of the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature hosted a workshop on the complexities and key components of nature-friendly offshore wind and grid development across Europe. Drawing lessons learned from the North and Baltic Seas, the workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities for the Mediterranean Sea basin. This workshop took place at WindEurope's Annual Event in Bilbao and is one of many activities RGI and OCEaN planned for the three days of the Annual Event.

In response to the twin crises of climate change and energy security, Europe is committed to expanding renewables, with a significant share planned as offshore wind. Simultaneously, to address the biodiversity crisis, the European Commission has set ambitious plans to protect and restore marine ecosystems with binding targets by 2030. These commitments may lead to conflicts as we address these complex and overlapping goals in Europe’s busy seas.

In the Mediterranean basin, although offshore wind capacity and the accompanying electricity grids are in their early stages, numerous projects are in the pipeline and hold the potential to contribute to the region’s energy transition. A sustainable transition in the Mediterranean will require, among other elements, due consideration of its rich biodiversity, the adoption of innovative technology tailored to its unique context and the engagement of diverse stakeholders.

Against this backdrop, this workshop brought together the perspectives of wind developers, transmission system operators, and NGOs to discuss the complexities and key components of nature-friendly offshore wind and grid development. Drawing lessons learned from the North and Baltic Seas, the workshop focused on the challenges and opportunities for the Mediterranean Sea basin.

This workshop was organised by the Renewables Grid Initiative, WindEurope, and Members of the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature, in both the North and Baltic Seas and the Mediterranean Sea. A networking lunch directly followed our workshop.

OCEaN Exhibition Stand

RGI and the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature had a stand (location: 1-A130) in the exhibition hall for all three days of WindEurope's Annual Event.

Presentations at OCEaN Members' Stands

To highlight the collaborations and projects of OCEaN Members working to reconcile offshore energy and nature in European seas, we organised short presentations throughout the Annual Event at the stands of their Members.

March 20 (11:00-11:45): SSE Renewables held the presentation 'Quantification of Biodiversity Gain' alongside an input from RGI on GINGR (Location: Stand 3-E60).

March 20 (15:30-16:15): Ørsted discussed their collaborations with The Rich North Sea and Van Oord in the presentation 'Biodiversity action in Borssele Offshore Wind Farm' (Location: Stand 3-B70).

March 21 (9:30-10:15):BlueFloat Energy and Ocean Ecostructures held the presentation 'Early social and environmental integration of offshore wind in the Mediterranean Sea' (Location: Stand 3-D80).

Additional Activities

22 March (10:30-11:00):The North Sea Foundation was at the OCEaN stand to discuss our joint poster on mitigation measures and answer questions (Location: Stand 1-A130).

Throughout the event: Our poster on 'How to avoid and minimise environmental impacts from offshore wind and grid infrastructure' was displayed (Location: Poster Hall, P0.059).
