Continuing RGI’s ‘Need for Grids’ series, two new videos create awareness on energy system optimisation.
In one of the videos, the topic of circularity is explored from the perspective of increasing EU competitiveness and resilience. On the other hand, the second video dives into how the EU electricity grids are planned and the need for collaboration in this process.
Seeking to boost public understanding and acceptance of electricity grids, RGI created its ‘Need for Grids’ video series. Updated annually, our library tackles different topics, helping to create awareness of the challenges and opportunities for the energy transition.
In 2025, our videos focus on the need for an optimised energy system, looking into the implementation of circular approaches and the EU collaborative planning process. These videos are available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

With increasing challenges of geopolitical tensions and resource scarcity, expanding electricity grids in an optimised and sustainable way will be crucial to ensure the energy transition. Watch our new video on “Wired for Circularity – Sustainable Power Grids for a Brighter Future” to learn how the concept of circular economy can be implemented when building the needed energy infrastructure to achieve climate goals. While circularity can reduce environmental and social impacts, it can also promote resilience, competitiveness and sustainability for the EU.

The Optimised Grid:
Collaborative Planning for an Efficient Energy Transition
How is Europe planning its energy future to keep the lights on and hit climate targets? This video takes you inside the complex world of European grid planning and the massive collaborative effort behind it. Discover how ENTSO-E and ENTSO-G coordinate a continent-wide Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) that maps out cross-border grid expansion projects every two years, aligning with each country’s national plans. Crucially, this process invites broad stakeholder input – from industry experts to environmental groups – ensuring new power lines for renewable energy are built with nature and biodiversity in mind.
