RGI welcomes new Member: IPTO - Renewables Grid Initiative

RGI warmly welcomes our newest Member, IPTO – The Independent Power Transmission Operator of Greece

Joining as a new RGI member, the Independent Power Transmission Operator of Greece (IPTO) is a public organisation supervised by the Ministry of Environment & Energy. IPTO is responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and development of the Hellenic Electricity Transmission System, aiming to ensure safe and undisrupted power supply across the country.

IPTO’s Ten-Year Network Development Plan provides for the electrical interconnection of major Greek islands in the High Voltage System by the end of the decade, the strengthening and modernisation of the continental power grid as well as the facilitation of Greece’s transition towards a cleaner energy mix and a climate-resilient future.

The Operator’s investment program includes state-of-the-art energy projects such as the HVDC Crete-Attica power link, the interconnection of the Cyclades as well as the integration of the Dodecanese and the Northeast Aegean islands to the mainland transmission system, which pave the way for higher green energy penetration on a domestic and regional level.

IPTO is also developing and designing new interconnectors to all neighbouring countries (Italy, Bulgaria, Albania, North Macedonia and Turkey) and the Eastern Mediterranean (Cyprus, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia), with Greece as the main hub (find out more on IPTO’s website).
